Patrick Lieske

Founder, Chief Instructor

Pat Lieske hails from Davison, Michigan, a quaint town east of Flint, where his love for fishing and hunting flourished during his upbringing alongside his parents and two brothers. Clay target shooting entered his life during his teenage years, sparked by a hunter’s safety class at Williams Gun Sight in Davison. A flyer for a skeet shooting league caught his eye, leading him to enroll and dive into the world of skeet shooting throughout high school. However, his shooting pursuits took a hiatus when he pursued a Business and Finance degree at the University of Michigan.

A transformative phone call in 1989 rekindled Lieske’s passion for shooting, introducing him to sporting clays. Following graduation, he made a bold decision, leaving a corporate job to become a full-time shooting instructor, while his wife Karen embraced motherhood. His journey as an instructor started at a private hunt club and evolved into freelancing. In 2002, he took over Island Lake Shooting Range and expanded to include Bald Mountain Shooting Range in 2009, establishing Michigan Shooting Centers.

Under Lieske’s leadership, these ranges became premier sporting clays destinations, hosting major championships. Pat, a decorated professional shooter, boasts victories such as the 2014 NSCA National Sporting Clays Champion and 2012 World Sporting Clays Championship Runner-Up. With over 30 years in the shooting sports industry, Lieske’s accolades include inductions into the Michigan Sporting Clays Hall of Fame (2013) and the National Sporting Clays Association Hall of Fame (2014). The Lieske family, including wife Karen, sons Drew and Gage, and even Pat’s mother, contribute to the success of Michigan Shooting Centers.

Drew Lieske was raised in a family deeply rooted in the world of shooting sports. He began his competitive sporting journey at the age of 12.

Drew achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the youngest Michigander to attain NSCA (National Sporting Clays Association) master class at the age of 15. In 2017, he made history by becoming the youngest individual to win the Michigan State Championship at the age of 21. Drew has garnered recognition, being named to the NSCA All-American team eight times and the NSCA U.S. Team twice.

Graduating as the valedictorian from Davison High School in 2014, Drew secured a full-ride academic and athletic scholarship to Hillsdale College. There, he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2018 with a double major in Finance and Mathematics. He stands as the sole member of the Hillsdale College Shotgun Sports Team to receive ACUI (Association of College Unions International) All-American honors for all four years of his collegiate career. Drew led the team to Division III first place titles in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. In 2017, he clinched the Collegiate National Championship, outperforming 900 competitors by a record-breaking 12 targets.

Beyond the shooting range, Drew cherishes moments with his family—wife Allie, son Brady, and their two golden retrievers. His diverse interests include golfing, fishing, hiking, traveling, and boating. Drew’s commitment extends to community involvement, as he has served on the Michigan Sporting Clays Association’s board. He actively participates in activities with the Kensington Church in Lake Orion.

Edward Plocek

Shotgun Instructor

Ed Plocek has a couple decades of shooting experience with a Level 1 NSCA Shooting Instructors Certificate (taught by Gary Greenway) and ten plus years of instruction at Island Lake Shooting (under the watchful eye of Pat Lieske) and you will find Ed’s developed his no non-sense instructional style that is not only enjoyable but highly effective for all levels of shooters. Ed’s philosophy is “to aid any shooter, you must first watch them shoot thereby identifying strengths and weaknesses allowing formulation of a plan which will quickly and effectively be of benefit”.

Ed’s instructions do not end with the lesson but continue on with “homework” in the form “specifically selected exercises” that target the shooters weaknesses, this coupled with the suggestion of practice, practice and more practice. You’ll find a lesson with Ed to be both enjoyable and beneficial.
