The Orion Mountaineers youth program welcomes boys and girls (6rd grade-high school) who are interested in learning the basics of sporting clays shooting under the supervision of certified coaches. The program is affiliated with the nationally recognized Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP).

The Orion Mountaineers program was founded in the spring of 2021 and is based out of our Lake Orion location, Bald Mountain Shooting Range. Drew Lieske, MSC’s Vice President, coaches the team along with several certified volunteer assistant coaches and parent volunteers.

The program groups kids in divisions according to their grade. Intermediate division is for middle school and JV and Varsity for high school kids.

Athletes on the Mountaineers team practice once-weekly from March through the end of June. Practices are from 5:00pm – 7:00pm on Wednesday evenings. The team generally attends several youth competitions, two of which include a Conference Championship and the Michigan State Championship. Athlete participation in competitions is not obligatory, but is recommended.

The program is open to everyone; however, there is a limit on how many athletes the program can accommodate. For this reason, athletes who are interested in joining must apply to participate. Applications open the 1st of January each year.

To be added to the “interest” list for next season, please email Drew Lieske at drew@mishoot.com.

What is the SCTP?

The SCTP is a national youth clay target shooting program focused on “team”! There is no room for the win at all cost attitude. The SSSF or Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation implements this program. Currently, the SCTP has over 20,000 athletes/coaches across the country participating in the program encompassing 47 states. The National SCTP Championship hosts more than 1,800 athletes and their families each year.

Shooting Team Scope

The SCTP offers participation in the American disciplines of Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays. SCTP also offers the Olympic disciplines of Bunker Trap, Trap Doubles and International Skeet. The Mountaineers program primarily practices sporting clays.

Support the Team

The Orion Mountaineers shooting program is supported by team fundraisers and donations. All donations are used to supplement the cost of ammunition, clay targets, competition entry fees, and team gear for our youth shooters. The team preferred method of support it peer to peer donations through our endowment account with the MidWayUSA Foundation. Donate now >
